The State Coal Mine Visitor Centre at Wonthaggi offers visitors a new welcoming landmark for the historic site.
FMSA was engaged by Parks Victoria to review the existing masterplan with the intention of enhancing the visitor’s experience through improved pathways, facilities and displays, as well as design a new Visitor’s Centre in preparation for the reopening of the underground mine tours.
The new Visitor Centre building references existing site themes and materials, the past story and position of the coalmine, and in the context of sustainability and energy, offering the visitor a complete journey. Facilities provided include interpretive display areas, tour ticketing, a cafeteria, an enhanced theatre and staff offices.
