FMSA Mapping the ‘Burbs

Recently FMSA were invited to participate in MAPPING THE ‘BURBS, a program creating bike tours in various areas around Melbourne. FMSA Director Greg Anson and Graduate Jonny Tanoto worked together to create an architectural tour of Beaumaris.

Mapping the ‘Burbs is an opportunity to explore architectural sites of interest by bicycle. This is a mapping project in inner, outer and regional suburbia. Nine architectural firms either located or with a close affinity to suburban Melbourne and regional Victoria have designed a cycling tour of significant architectural sites within their neighbourhood.

These self-guided tours have been reviewed by Bicycle Victoria – a partner of this event. The designs of the maps by the nine firms incorporate intimate knowledge to promote architecture in outer metropolitan areas. This mapping activity of architectural-based tours celebrates and reveals Victoria through a carefully considered itinerary. The tours aim to engage the community with local architecture in a fun, active way.

The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects is set to launch ‘MAPPING THE “BURBS’, an activity within the State of Design Festival 2011.
