We believe our staff are our greatest asset. Their creativity, knowledge and professionalism aren’t the only things they bring to the table – simply put they are great people with varied interests, experiences and hidden talents.
And we think it is time you got to know them better in our new series 1 minute with, starting with Associate and Communications Manager Jess Hyde.
What is it that you do at FMSA?
Most of my role centres on supporting the team so they can get on with the business of designing great buildings. My role is unique in the office because I’m not in a design role, but work closely with the design team under the umbrella of communications. I mix the outward nature of marketing with office focused tasks. Be it responding to a bid for a new project, to writing a news post or assisting our clients; no two days are the same for me.
What’s the best bit about your job?
The best bit about my role is that no week is ever exactly the same. I work with the whole team delivering a pretty diverse range of tasks which means my day is always in flux.
How does design support you?
I think for better or worse design is an inescapable part of our lives. Practically, it helps streamline how I do my job. And personally, my interest in design has supported me in living a life that lets me be creative in my own time.
When you need inspiration where do you turn?
Anyone who has seen my desk knows I love to pin up some pretty random sources inspiration, but most often I turn to travel photos, art, old fashion books, old magazines and movies I love – currently its La La Land all the way.
The first building you fell in love with..
The National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road. It’s the first building that I remember making me feel something as a little kid. It was different to anything I had ever experience in my suburban childhood. I distinctly remember the light and the stillness in the old galleries and falling in love.
What’s your favourite building in the world?
That I have actually visited it, it’s a three way tie between the Guggenheim in NYC, and the National Gallery on St Kilda Road. Basically I love galleries….
And now the fun ones:
3 words to describe yourself: Serious answer – loyal, creative, sarcastic. Real answer – great at eyeliner.
Sweet or savoury? I love to bake so it has to be sweet all the way.
Recent exhibition you loved … I loved Clinamen by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at the NGV. So beautiful and oddly peaceful.
Place you last traveled to & your favourite part: I spent a week in New Zealand’s north island which was amazing. My favourite part was exploring the beautiful natural sites like the Blue Springs at the Te Waihou Walkway and Piha Beach. I can’t wait to go back!
The next destination to kick off your list is.. It’s a long list but I would love to visit Japan. I also wouldn’t turn down a trip to New York, LA or London so I can do some gallery hopping.
The song that’s on repeat.. The soundtrack from La La Land. You don’t want to know how many times I have seen the movie…
